Drivers walk away from ugly crash

Collision causes traffic backup during rush hour

A rush hour crash resulted in heavy damage to two cars and backed up traffic, but those in the cars were able to walk away, authorities say.

At about 5:37 p.m. Tuesday, Capital City Fire/Rescue and Juneau Police Department personnel were called to the scene of the crash at the intersection of Egan Drive outbound and Channel Vista Drive near Salmon Creek, Assistant Chief Tod Chambers said.

The crash involved a blue 1999 Honda CRV driven by an 18-year-old man and a white 2013 Ford Focus driven by a 72-year-old man, JPD Public Safety Manager Erann Kalwara said. Kalwara said the police report has not been completed yet, so she had no details on whether a driver was cited. She was also unable to confirm which car hit the other.

Both cars sustained major damage, Chambers said, but the drivers were able to walk away from the crash. CCFR didn’t even need to treat anyone for injuries, Chambers said, and nobody was taken to the hospital. Both cars were towed away, Kalwara said. The outbound lane and turn lane to Channel Vista Drive were closed for a while, Kalwara said, and Chambers said CCFR assisted with traffic control.

The site was cleaned up shortly afterward and traffic returned to normal.
