First Friday comes to your couch

Musical numbers, art demos and drag are part of the plan

While the city and state are slowly reopening, Juneau’s monthly celebration of arts and culture will again be virtual.

First Friday for May will consist of a collection of virtual galleries, live online events and a handful of food and beverage specials.

Here’s a rundown of planned events shared by Juneau Arts and Humanities Council; however, some late additions are expected. More information can be found through jahc.org.

Juneau Drag Live

This live, virtual drag show will start at 8 p.m. and features Juneau’s drag Queens and kings direct from their isolated locations. It will be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/GigiMonroe.

Gigi Monroe hosts live and presents performances by an expansive cast. There will be opportunities to tip individual performers as well as the the whole cast via Venmo.

JAHC: “Wearable Arts Face Mask Couture” and online store grand opening.

The Juneau Arts and Humanities Council will present face masks from the creative minds of community members. Featuring both functional and non-functional designs, these creations will make you look and think about protective gear differently. Check the Juneau Arts and Humanities Facebook page at 4:30 p.m. on First Friday for a link to the whole show. The JAHC Gallery and online store’s grand opening will be Friday and will continue to add items and art.

Purchases over $25 get free in-town delivery and shipping available.

Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum: “Alaska Positive” online exhibit

“Alaska Positive,” the Alaska State Museum’s biennial, juried photography exhibit, was on display at the Museum from Dec. 6, 2019-Feb. 15, 2020. This year’s juror was David Michael Kennedy, whose career spans over 50 years. Kennedy selected 38 photos by 26 photographers from around the state. For the Juror’s Choice Award, he selected Cody Swanson’s Dipnetters, created using a pinhole camera constructed from a cast from the photographer’s head.

Sealaska Heritage Institute: Virtual demonstrating artist David R. Boxley

Sealaska Heritage will continue its Virtual Demonstrating Artist series in May with Tsimshian artist David R. Boxley. A First Friday livestream will begin at 5 p.m. on SHI’s Facebook page, moderated by SHI’s Rochelle Smallwood.

Meet Me In Alaska: Kelsey Erickson-Kizer

Kelsey Erickson-Kizer will be debuting a new work of Acrylic on canvas for the May virtual First Friday.

This 4:30- 7 p.m. event is dedicated to Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls. May 5 is National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls.

Annie Kaill’s: Frank Lynn Pierce photography & Mother’s Day gifts

Annie Kaill’s will feature work by award-winning Juneau photographer Frank Lynn Pierce. Plus a selection of Mother’s Day gifts including the new “togetherness” bracelet from Colleen Goldrich.

Pierce’s work includes images from the outdoors including nature and landscape photography. Brown bears and mountain goats join calving glaciers and northern lights among his photography art. Select in-stock vases at will be offered at 25% off. Goldrich is offering a new hand-crafted bracelet that will be promoted throughout the month.

New work will be posted on Facebook and Instagram and then. online. There will also be a window display of Frank’s photography and Mother’s Day gifts.

Small Systems Design Associates: Jerry Smetzer, Juneau Author video reading

Jerry Smetzer, Juneau writer, painter and science enthusiast, has prepared a six-minute YouTube video highlighting the chronology and history that binds the 10 stories in his updated collection of historic fiction, “Cassiopeia’s Quest – Revelation,” released locally and on Amazon two months ago. A link to the YouTube video will be provided to anyone who requests one by emailing jsmetzer@gmail.com with the email subject line JACC CHRONO VID.
