The third day of September is the first Friday of the month, and with it comes a monthly celebration of arts and culture in Juneau.
Juneau Arts and Humanities Council shared this schedule of events for this First Friday:
Juneau Arts and Humanities Council: Portrait of the Tongass, https://www.jahc.org/facilities/arts-council-gallery/, up through the month.
The Juneau Arts & Humanities Council presents “Portrait of the Tongass”, a virtual gallery exhibition of paintings, drawings, and photographs made in the field by emily charlotte taibleson and Alex Witt.
They created this show to share their reverence for the Tongass National Forest stewarded by the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people. At 17-million acres this is the largest temperate rainforest left on Earth and the largest national forest in the United States. This work was made en plein aire during multi week research trips around Juneau and Glacier Bay. They lugged oil paints and an SLR camera up fjords, through bogs, and into the woods. The artists do not aim to glorify or simplify the Alaskan landscape, but to present its very complex present. Enjoy a glacial breeze as you view. Juneau Arts & Humanities Council: Alaska Breastfeeds Statewide Juried Art Exhibition,https://www.jahc.org/facilities/arts-council-gallery/, up through the month.
The Alaska Breastfeeds Statewide Juried Art Exhibition is the 2014 brainchild of the Fairbanks Breastfeeding Coalition (a local subsidiary of the Alaska Breastfeeding Coalition), designed to be an artistic celebration on the theme of breastfeeding. Since its inception in Fairbanks, the show has grown to include the entire state. Submissions from any area of the state of Alaska and in any artistic medium are welcome. So far, the show has been hosted in the Interior by the Fairbanks Breastfeeding Coalition and in Juneau by the Juneau Breastfeeding Alliance, the latter of which will again host the 2021 show.
Devil’s Club Brewing Co: Christine Kleinhenz of Tide Watcher is showing her Wild Lupine collection, 100 N. Franklin St, 5-7 p.m., up through the month.
Christine Kleinhenz traveled, hiked and camped this summer with her family in various parks while sketching wildflowers and exploring watercolor. One of her favorite sketches, a wild lupine was the inspiration for this show. Wanting to recreate the joy of the experience, she painted four watercolor lupine in delicate patterns and striking colors. Kleinhenz used a friend’s photo taken on top of Eaglecrest to create a landscape with blocks of flowing color and bold design. This acrylic on wood painting again showcases, you guessed it, more lupine. The painting is divided into three sections which can be hung separately or together as one large piece.
Annie Kaill’s: Jacqueline Tingey, artist, 124 Seward St. 4:30-7:30 p.m., up through the month.
Annie Kaill’s will feature local artist, Jacqueline Tingey, and her recent original paintings and multi-media pieces, one of a kind prints, and hand-painted leather jewelry. Currently she mostly works with watercolors, though she often experiments with new media and techniques, often combining multiple to create unique pieces.
Juneau Artists Gallery: Lue Isaac, painter, 175 S. Franklin St, 4:30-6 p.m. up through the month. Award-winning artist, Lue Isaac, is the featured artist for the month of September at the Juneau Artists Gallery.
She will be showing an assortment of new paintings. Isaac is interested in talking to anyone interested in painting classes or a life drawing open studio. The gallery asks attendees to wear a mask while inside the gallery. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
