Newcomer Gregory wins Assembly seat

The Juneau Assembly has two new members.

Norton Gregory came out ahead of incumbent Kate Troll after a narrow race, clenching 52.4 percent of the vote and the Areawide Assembly seat.

Incumbent Mary Becker held on to her District 1 seat — beating back challengers Arnold Liebelt and William Quayle Jr. — with 50.9 percent of the vote.

Assembly newcomer Beth Weldon won her unopposed bid for the open District 2 seat, winning 96.1 percent of the vote.

Dan DeBartolo and Steve Whitney snagged both open School Board seats, defeating Kevin Allen and Jason Hart. DeBartolo pulled 31.5 percent of the vote and Whitney won 28.1 percent of the vote.

Juneau voters passed ballot initiatives raising the sales tax on marijuana from 5 percent to 8 percent and extending the city’s temporary 3 percent sales tax for another five years. A third ballot proposition that would’ve made the 3 percent sales tax permanent failed.

These election results are unofficial until the absentee and questioned ballots are counted. The results will not be certified until Oct. 11.

A total of 6,497 ballots were cast in the election, which accounts for 25.9 percent of the city’s total 25,100 registered voters.
