Glacier Bay National Park is proposing no increase in the number of cruise ships allowed within the park in 2017.
According to a notice published by the park on Tuesday, park administrators are proposing to allow 153 cruise ships between June and August, then another 92 in May and September. Those figures are the same as the ones allowed this year, and they would be effective through 2020.
The visits would have to be spread out: Only two cruise ships per day (at maximum) would be allowed into the park.
According to surveys, Glacier Bay is one of the most popular destinations for cruise ship tourists visiting Southeast Alaska, but area residents and environmentalists have regularly opposed increasing the number of allowed cruise ships, stating concerns about overcrowding and the pollution brought by visiting ships.
