Subport property goes up for sale

Bids will be accepted starting later this summer

The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is now accepting bids for its Juneau property known as the subport.

The minimum bid is $3,634,000 for the 2.9-acre property located near Coast Guard Station Juneau, according to an announcement from the Trust on Monday. The Trust Land Office, the state agency that manages the Trust’s land assets, is handling the sale.

Sealed bids must be mailed or hand-delivered to the Trust Land Office in Anchorage (2600 Cordova St, Anchorage, AK 99503). Bids will be accepted from Aug. 15 until Sept. 6. A $100,000 deposit in the form of a cashier’s check must accompany the bid. More information, including bidding instructions and property documents, can be found at juneauwaterfrontparcel.com.

The property has long been a focus for AMHTA and the City and Borough of Juneau. CBJ City Manager Rorie Watt has repeatedly expressed his frustration with how long it’s taken the Trust to sell the property.

The decision to sell the property stemmed from a study done by a nonprofit research firm called the Urban Land Institute (ULI). The trust hired the firm last year, paying $50,000 for a study on how the trust can get the most money for the property. The purpose of AMHTA is to make money off the land that it owns and use that money to benefit those who need mental health care in Alaska.
