On Sept. 5, 1986, Alaska’s Republican legislators planned to change the manner of coalitions in the Alaska Legislature. Usually, coalitions were a mix of Republicans, Democrats and Independents, and were based on the representative’s location rather than political party. The Alaskan Republican Party planned to withhold campaign money from any incumbent who joins a non-Republican coalition, meaning the Alaska Legislature’s atmosphere is sure to change.
As for the City and Borough of Juneau, candidates ran towards the municipal office to file for candidacy. With the deadline looming that day, there was a rush of new incoming candidates.
