The Hoonah boys basketball team had an easy day one during the 2016 Region V 1A Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, scoring more points by halftime than their opponents would all game.
The Braves defeated Gustavus, a co-ed team featuring four eighth graders on the roster, 71-31.
Gustavus senior guard Jonah Patrick shined for the Foxes in defeat, scoring a game-high 27 points. Eighth grader Jacob Patrick added three points and sophomore Keiley Ewing scored one.
Every Hoonah player made the scorer’s book, with sophomore Jerry White leading the way with 15 points. Senior Antonio Phillips added 12 points, followed by freshman Josh Wright with 10, juniors Jeffrey Devlin and Emmanuel Budke with nine each, sophomore Brandon Guthrie with eight, senior Raymond Osborne with six and junior Randy Roberts with two.
Hoonah took an 18-3 advantage at the end of the first period, and extended that lead to 32-14 at the half. Gustavus’ Jonah Patrick scored 10 of his team’s 11 points in the quarter.
The Braves caught fire in the third with a 23-point quarter behind 11 points from White for a 55-23 lead that would only grow larger in the fourth quarter.
Hoonah was 1-of-3 from the free throw line. Gustavus shot 11-of-19.
Hoonah will next play the winner of the Klawock/Thorne Bay game at 8 p.m. Thursday. Results of that game can be found online at juneauempire.com. Gustavus will play the loser of that game at 2:30 p.m. today.
