Alumni game provides ‘shot of energy’ for Huskies football

Over 3,000 people attended alumni game, coach says

The Juneau Alumni Football game on Friday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park may have just featured two touchdowns — the Legends defeated the Stars 10-7 — but the game’s primary purpose was served even before kickoff.

Rich Sjoroos, the event’s organizer and Juneau Huskies coach, said with over 3,000 people attending the game, the event raised more money than other previous Juneau football fundraiser.

Sjoroos declined to comment specifically on how much money was raised. Even though it’s a substantial amount, he said, it’s still only a fraction of the roughly $180,000 needed to fund a high school team for one year.

“It just showed that there’s hope for football,” Sjoroos said. “I’ve been to some games recently where there’s less than 100 people there. I think it gave it a shot of energy and we just got to keep the momentum going.”

Sjoroos said other than a dislocated elbow, there were no serious injuries sustained by either team. After a scoreless third quarter, kicker Willy Dodd kicked the winning field goal for the Legends in the fourth.

The Juneau Huskies (formally Juneau United) hold their first official practice on July 31. The Huskies’ home opener is Saturday, Aug. 24, at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park against Antelope Union from Arizona.
