The Juneau-Douglas High School football team did everything in the rain but put on XtraTufs as they rolled over Eagle River 41-6 in a non-conference clash Saturday at Adair Kennedy Field.

“We were getting it done in the rain,” Juneau-Douglas coach Kevin Hamrick said. “Our offense is not an easy offense to get done in the rain but we did. Catching the ball in the rain can be tricky but it worked.”

The Eagle River defense had trouble getting past the JDHS front wall.

“The offensive line played really well,” Hamrick said. “Give them some kudos. Our running game didn’t really take off. We are definitely a passing team and our line gave Bubba (Stults) plenty of time.”

Stults connected on four touchdown passes and ran in another.

With 3:51 remaining in the first quarter, Stults capped off a 10-play drive with a run over the middle.

Eagle River went three-and-out and Donavin McCurley returned the punt 20 yards for good field position. Stults marched the team toward the goal line in six plays that saw Lance Fiagatusa rumble in for a 12-0 lead.

Stults then began his air assault, connecting with senior Hunter Hickok for a 24-yard pass in the second quarter and Guy Bean for a 2-pt conversion and a 20-0 lead.

In the third quarter Stults went four yards to Hickok for a score and 28 yards to Fiagatusa for another.

Eagle River got on the board with 8:14 remaining in the game as Jerimiah Clark earned a two-yard plunge.

The JDHS defense held again however, stopping quarterback Thad Heagy out of bounds during the 2-pt conversion attempt.

Stults capped off his night with a 62-yard pass play to senior Guy Bean and freshman Cristian Batac ran in the conversion for the 41-6 final.

“They scored on our back-up defense, which is no big deal,” Hamrick said. “We got a lot of guys playing time on the field so that was cool. Our defense did their contain, which has been a problem for us in the past. They stopped the run and forced Eagle River to pass, which is good because our DB’s are really good. Overall our defense shut them down and played a complete game.”

JDHS will end the regular season against TMHS in the Glacier Bowl at Adair Kennedy Field next Saturday. The Crimson Bears will also honor their seniors. The winner of the Glacier Bowl will qualify as the Southeast Conference No. 2 seed into the state playoffs on Oct. 10.
