Crimson Bears spikers top Falcons

The Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball team defended home court with a 25-13, 25-17, 25-12 sweep of cross-town opponents Thunder Mountain on Tuesday.

Senior Maddie McKeown led JDHS with six kills and one block in game one.

Sophomore Leah Spargo served the Crimson Bears to a 10-0 advantage that included her own two aces and a kill.

JDHS pushed out to a 16-4 lead before TMHS’ Mary Landes, Tracy Bourassa and Maxie Saceda-Hurt used three service possessions to close to 19-10.

TMHS’ Marissa Tanuvasa-Tuvaifale used a Maya Haywood kill to put two more serves across and close to 22-13.

After McKeown killed to regain possession, JDHS’ Spargo closed out the match with two hard serves that McKeown battered down on the court for the 25-13 win.

In game two, the Crimson Bears and Falcons exchanged points throughout. JDHS held the lead but never earned more than a five-point cushion until the end.

Leading 21-17, the Crimson Bears’ McKeown killed for ball possession and Spargo closed out the match with two aces and another McKeown kill for a 25-17 win.

McKeown had four kills and four aces, Kallen Hoover two kills and two aces, Spargo two kills and two aces, and Martina Worden an ace in the win. The Falcons’ Saceda Hurt had five kills and Haywood two kills and an ace to lead TMHS.

Game three saw runs by JDHS open 13-5 and 22-6 leads before TMHS’ Harriet Martin served 5 points that included an ace, two kills by Saceda-Hurt and a kill by Abby De Rocher.

An error gave the 23rd point to JDHS, and the Crimson Bears’ McKeown killed point 24 and blocked the match winner at 25-12.

McKeown and Hoover led the Crimson Bears with two kills and a block each, Hoover had one ace, Spargo and Worden notched a kill each and Abby Meiners scored on a block.

Saceda-Hurt led the Falcons with two kills, De Rocher had two kills and Martin one ace.

JDHS and TMHS will play in the Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE) this weekend at JDHS.
