Summer snow showers have cancelled the 25th annual Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay, according to a Saturday report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
The 148-mile bike race, which crosses the U.S.-Canada border, has never before been cancelled.
Snow showers at the starting line have rendered conditions unsafe, disappointing the 1,300 riders who registered for the event, race coordinator Mike Kramer told the CBC. Black ice and slushy sections of roadway made conditions too dangerous for biking, especially with thin-wheeled racing bikes, Kramer said.
The race typically runs from Haines Junction, Yukon Territory, to Haines, Alaska.
