A former Juneau-Douglas High School soccer player is headed into the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.
Justin Dorn, the school’s third all-time goals leader, is one of 10 members of the 2019 Hall of Fame Class, the Alaska School Activities Association announced on Thursday. The 2001 JDHS graduate led the Crimson Bears to a state title as a senior before going on to play for Gonzaga University. He’s now a physical therapist in Juneau.
“I’ve had the good fortune to coach so many incredible young men, but Justin Dorn stands the tallest in my view,” JDHS coach Gary Lehnhart said in a press release. “He was both a skillful and tenacious player. He was unselfish, and despite scoring 49 goals in his career he often passed up opportunities for himself giving the ball to his teammates.”
The Hall of Fame class includes nine other former student athletes and coaches.
The student athletes are: Philip Engebretsen, Homer; Randy Hanson, Bethel Regional; Alev Kelter, Chugiak; Stacia Rustad, Kenai Central; Cody Tanner, Chugiak; Austin Vanderford, Ninilchik. The coaches are: Mike Ashley, Anchorage area high schools; Vic Belleque, Dillingham; Steve Nerland, Service.
It’s the fourth consecutive year JDHS has had an inductee. Dorn follows in the footsteps of Chad Bentz (class of 2016), George Houston (class of 2017), Talisa Rhea (class of 2018) and Leah Francis (class of 2018).
The induction ceremony is slated for May 5 at the Lakefront Hotel in Anchorage.
