Friday prep basketball and hockey roundup

Juneau high school basketball teams ran up against hot opponents Friday in four away contests. Only the Juneau-Douglas High School boys basketball team won a game on Friday.

The Thunder Mountain boys and girls lost to Colony at the Joe T. Classic basketball tournament in Fairbanks.

The JDHS girls lost in their third conference game of the season to Ketchikan.

In high school hockey news, JDHS upended Lathrop 4-0 at the Patty Center in Fairbanks.

Here’s a roundup of all five games from Friday.

Colony 50, TMHS (boys) 45

Senior Luke Clark made five 3-pointers in the second half against Colony, but the Falcons (6-5, 2-0 SEC) couldn’t catch up to the Knights in a 50-45 loss.

Clark finished with a game-high 23 points for TMHS, one point shy of his season-high point total.

The Knights led 22-15 at halftime and 34-32 to start the fourth quarter.

Colony’s Will Freeman scored 20 points in the win.

TMHS plays Monroe Catholic, the only other team without a win in the tournament, on Saturday at 4:40 p.m.

Colony 69, TMHS (girls) 41

Thunder Mountain freshman guard Neal Garcia scored a team-high 11 points, but the Falcons (2-8, 0-2 SEC) fell to Colony 69-41 on Friday at the Joe T. Classic.

Colony’s Alex Carlton led the way for the Knights with 16 points.

The Falcons play Monroe Catholic on Saturday afternoon looking for their first win of the tournament.

JDHS (boys) 51, Mt. Edgecumbe 48

Juneau-Douglas High School outscored Mt. Edgecumbe 20-12 in the third quarter and JDHS defeated the Braves 51-48 on Friday at the Alaska Prep Shootout in Anchorage.

JDHS senior Erik Kelly scored eight points in the third quarter alone and had 20 in the game. Senior guard Luke Mallinger finished with nine points, five rebounds and three assists.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Crimson Bears.

JDHS plays in the fourth-place game on Saturday at 4 p.m. against Soldotna.

Ketchikan 75, JDHS (girls) 62

The Ketchikan girls basketball team reeled off 63 points in three quarters Friday night against Juneau-Douglas, winning 75-62 over the Crimson Bears.

It was first conference game of the season for Ketchikan and the third for JDHS (3-7, 2-1 SEC).

Caitlin Pusich scored 18 points in the first half on her way to 25 points in the game. Cassie Dzinich scored 13 points and Sadie Tuckwood added 12 for JDHS, who dressed four fewer players than Kayhi.

Kings’ guards Ashley Huffine and Brittany Slick scored 19 and 18 points respectively in the win.

The two squads are back in action Saturday night at the Clarke Cochrane Gymnasium.

Hockey: JDHS 4, Lathrop 0

The Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team rebounded from a Thursday loss with a 4-0 shutout victory over Lathrop High School Friday at the Patty Center in Fairbanks.

Cody Mitchell earned the shutout in net, saving all 26 shots sent his way.

“Cody had a good game, rebounded well from the day before and overall we were able to execute and get the puck in the net,” JDHS head coach Luke Adams said via cellphone.

Junior Bill Bosse earned a hat trick while senior Cole Barelli contributed a goal for the Crimson Bears.

Adams said the team played well on Thursday too, but the breaks didn’t go the team’s way. On Friday, the team kept shooting and pressuring the Lathrop goalie.

“They got a little frustrated but we knew we could put the puck in and had to really focus on the rebounds instead of the initial shots,” Adams said.

JDHS plays its final two games of the regular season next weekend at the Treadwell Arena against North Pole. It will be the last opportunity for the Crimson Bears to better its conference record, which stands at 1-3.

North Pole, Lathrop and JDHS are all in the hunt for the No. 2 Mid Alaska Conference playoff seed. West Valley already locked up the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, which kick off in three weeks in Fairbanks.
