Gold Medal: Wednesday night games

Kake knocked Wrangell out of B bracket contention Wednesday afternoon in a 64-53 game.

The teams scored back-and-forth until the closing minutes, when Kake earned the defensive stops it needed to slow Wrangell down and close the game with the advantage.

Tim Demmert led Kake to the win with 17 points. Following Demmert was Shea Jackson with 14 and Dean Cavenaugh with 13.

Wrangell was led by Mitch Mork with 12 points, Tony Hardin with 11, and Cody Angerman with 10.

Wrangell was knocked out of the Gold Medal tournament while Kake looks forward to a 3:30 p.m. Thursday matchup in the loser’s bracket.

Hoonah won a 68-24 rout against Kake in a loser-out game in the W bracket Wednesday night.

Hoonah took control in the first half, with Tarvin White leading her team to a 38-20 halftime lead on nine field goals. Kake couldn’t get back into the game in the second half, finding only one field goal and two free throws in scoring.

Tarvin White led all scorers with 22 points. Following White for Hoonah was Marian Martin with 14.

Kake’s Violet Johnson scored nine points in defeat.

Hoonah moves on to play tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. on Friday against the loser of a Haines, Craig matchup.

Kake is out of the tournament.

Doing most of their damage in the second half, Klukwan bested Angoon 102-87 in a must-win game in the C bracket Wednesday night.

Andrew Friske led the way for Klukwan with 36 points while David Buss scored 13 and Jason Shull had 10. Stuart DeWitt and Jesse McGraw added nine each.

Leading Angoon in defeat was Levi Johnson with 20 points. Teammates James Wilson and Stan Johnson Jr. both had 16 points while Guy Hunter and Frank Lane added 15 points each.

Klukwan moves on to a 3:30 p.m. Friday game. The winner of that game will play in the C bracket championship at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

Angoon was knocked out with their second loss.
