Showing they still had the right stuff, Albert Hinchman and Kamal Lindoff scored 17 points apiece to lead Hoonah past Angoon 73-48 in the Masters’s Bracket of the 74th Annual Gold Medal Basketball Tournament at the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé gymnasium.

“It’s good to be back in it,” Hoonah’s Michael Mills said. “We’re starting to click and we are having fun. So as long as we keep running and stay in relatively good health I think we’ll do OK.”

Not to be outdone Angoon’s Travis See connected for a game-high 22 points in the loss.

“The first play of the game I drove in and jammed my right hand thumb,” See said. “Usually I don’t miss any of my free throws, I was 6-6 last game, and today I was 1-10 on free throws… It’s tough. This is my first year in the Masters. Figured I would move up and give younger guys in C Bracket for Angoon a chance to play for their home town… It is kind of hard to battle down against a team like Hoonah when they got a bunch of threats too and guys that can still get up and down the court..”

Hoonah’s Lindoff opened the first quarter with four baskets, Hinchman one from past the arch and Michael Mills one inside to hold a 15-12 advantage.

Angoon got a couple buckets from See, a long shot from David Johnson, and buckets from Jeff Duncan and Frank Jack III.

James Jack and Mark Prpich joined Lindoff, Hinchman and Mills in the second quarter scoring and Hoonah took a 30-23 lead at the break. See accounted for seven of Angoon’s points in the stanza.

Halftime seemed to stiffen up the Angoon side while Hoonah opened play on a 13-3 run and were never threatened in the remainder of play.

Hinchman tallied 10 points in that stanza for Hoonah while Angoon notched just two field goals and trailed 50-33.

Hoonah had even more fire power in the fourth quarter, scoring 25 points across seven players and Angoon rode the coattails of See, Albert Kookesh and Paul Johnson.

Jack added nine points for Hoonah, Prpich eight, Andy Mills and Michael Mills six apiece, Adam Lee and Joe Coronell five apiece and Kenny Willard two.

Hoonah hit 15-17 at the free throw line, Angoon 10-26.

Kookesh added seven points for Angoon, David Johnson six, Frank Jack III five, and P. Johnson and J. Duncan four apiece.

Hoonah advances to play in a Thursday morning elimination game while Angoon is relegated to watching the remainder of the tournament.

“I had fun, I enjoyed it,” Angoon’s See said. “I tried not to give the refs too much of a hard time…”

Hoonah (27 Gold Medal titles) last won the Masters Bracket in 2017, an 80-75 victory over Kake.

Angoon (14 Gold Medal titles) last won a Gold Medal championship in 2016 in the B Bracket.
