Rogert Trout scored two baskets and Michael Eaglestaff sank three free throws late in the game Friday to lead Hydaburg over Klawock to claim the Region V 1A basketball title at Thunder Mountain High School.

The teams were locked at 22-22 heading into the final period, but Hydaburg was able to make defensive stopped when needed while posting its best offensive quarter of the game.

Hydaburg was led in scoring by Nick Nix with 10 points, Trout with eight, Eaglestaff and Traesean Miramontez with six each, and Sidney Edenshaw added four.

Klawock’s Nate Yockey led all scorers with 13 points despite being held scoreless in the final quarter. Mason Hoppe added five points and Kevin Isaacs scored four.

Hydaburg took a slight 7-6 advantage after the first quarter behind four points from Edenshaw and a 3-pointer from Nix. Yockey scored all six of Klawock’s points to start the game, with one coming from behind the 3-point line and the rest from the free throw line.

In the second quarter, Yockey scored another five points, including one from deep, and Sylas Macasaet drained a three to keep Klawock in contention. A balanced scoring attack from Trout, Nix and Eaglestaff helped Hydaburg extend its lead slightly at halftime, 16-14.

Klawock held Hydaburg to just two field goals coming out of halftime, chipping away until the two teams were tied at 22-22 to end the third quarter.

Hydaburg shot 7-of-20 from the free throw line, and Klawock was 9-of-14.

Hydaburg will move on to the 1A state tournament starting March 16 in Anchorage.
