It’s a busy time for local swim club

Big meets in the past, tryouts in the future.

It’s a busy time of year for Glacier Swim Club.

The club recently competed in two championship meets, is concluding its season with a meet and will soon hold tryouts for its next season.

In mid-July, three Glacier Swim Club athletes competed in the Western Section Speedo Sectionals held in Austin, Texas, according to a newsletter from the club. Caleb Peimann, P.J. Foy and Micah Grigg faced competition from Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and California, among other locales. In late July, 10 Glacier Swim Club athletes competed in the Alaska Summer Champs held at Bartlett Pool in Anchorage.

In the earlier meet, Foy had a breakout meet, according to the club newsletter. Foy swam his best-ever times in his first summer senior swim meet, placing 21st in the 800-meter free event, 18th in the 200 breaststroke, 32nd in the 200 individual medley. and 32nd in the 50 free. He also broke several state records, according to the newsletter. Among them were the 15-16-year-old boys 800 free, open boys 800 free, 15-16 boys 100 breaststroke and the 15-16 boys 200 breast stroke.

Peimann also swam well, according to the newsletter, especially in the backstroke events. Five out of six events resulted in personal best times.

Three swimmers from Glacier Swim Club were selected for the Alaska All-Star Team currently competing in Lewisburg, Texas, in an western region all-star meet for swimmers 14 and younger. The three swimmers are Emma Fellman, Pacific Ricke and Matthew Plang, according to the swim club newsletter. The competition started Wednesday and runs through Saturday.

Tryouts for the swim club are also coming up.

They are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at Augustus Brown Pool and 3:30 p.m. Aug. 12 at Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Coach Scott Griffith can be contacted at (907)957-1815 or glacierswimclub@gci.net.
