JDHS boys edge Thunder Mountain in Friday swim meet

Spencer Holt and Jessica Davis scored a pair of individual titles on the first day of the Juneau Invitational swimming meet Friday at Dimond Park Aquatic Center.

Holt, a Thunder Mountain senior, made 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley victories look easy, touching the wall five seconds or more before the next swimmer. Davis, a senior on the reigning Region V champion Sitka Wolves, won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke, giving her team the slightest edge over Thunder Mountain in the team scores. Sitka finished with 145 points to Thunder Mountain’s 141, while the Juneau-Douglas boys topped Thunder Mountain 144-138.

The meet featured seven Southeast teams, mostly from the communities of Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan and Petersburg. The meet continued on Saturday afternoon another slate of the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving, 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.

Juneau-Douglas seniors Tyler Weldon and Tate Goering and sophomore Caleb Peimann all had strong meets. The three swimmers won two relays as well as placing high in their individual events. Weldon took first in the 100 freestyle while Peimann and Goering went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle, one of the closest races of the evening. Peimann won in 23.60 seconds while Goering finished in 23.70. Thunder Mountain’s Christopher Ray came in third with a time of 23.78 seconds.

Thunder Mountain’s Riley Traxler and Nancy Liddle — both freshmen — made waves with their performances in the 50, 200 and 500 freestyle. Traxler was second out of 25 swimmers in the 50 freestyle, finishing behind Grace Harang of Sitka. Liddle was second in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
