JDHS cross country edges Petersburg at Juneau Invitational

Both of Juneau’s prep cross country teams hosted the Juneau Invitational at Savikko Park Saturday, with 13 boys teams and nine girls teams competing in the last meet before next weekend’s regional meet at Sitka. The Juneau-Douglas High School girls, led by freshman Sadie Tuckwood, took first overall with the Crimson Bears boys placing second to Sitka. Thunder Mountain High School took third for both girls and boys.

Tuckwood improved on her time from last week’s mini meet by 18 seconds with her 18 minutes, 22.1 seconds time. This is the fastest time recorded in the state this season according to athletic.net, 28 seconds faster than the next best time and 10 seconds faster than Tuckwood has ever run on her home course.

“I keep focussing on getting my times faster and faster each race,” Tuckwood said. “This is a harder course, so it’s hard to get faster times here, but if I practice here it will be easier to improve my times on other courses.”

“I think she used the energy of a bigger meet to shave some time off,” JDHS coach Tristan Knutson-Lombardo said. “It’s always a little tough because courses are different, but we know times relative to courses up north and there’s no doubt she’s a top runner in the state.”

JDHS sophomore Arne Ellefson-Carnes once again gutted it out with Sitka’s David Wilcox and Collin Bociocco for the top three spots in the boys race. Ellefson-Carnes has duked it out with the pair in several races this year with photo finishes between the three becoming common. He won’t benefit from being pushed by the experienced Wolves at Regionals as his senior competitors run in the 3A competition.

“It felt great to run with those guys for the last time,” Ellefson-Carnes said. “There’s so much energy running with other people it really pushes the pace. … Personally, it’s going to be harder without Collin (Bociocco) and David (Wilcox) there.”

Thunder Mountain’s Erin Wallace and Jonah Penrose took second and fifth, respectively, as the top finishers for the Falcons. The Falcons girls logged eight lifetime personal records on the slow, wet course Saturday and the boys team closed the gap on JDHS considerably.

Thunder Mountain head coach Scott May says the easier week last weekend helped his team improve.

“It’s helped that we’ve been out here a number of times this year,” May said. “This is like the third or fourth time we’ve been out here this year and it really does help. … They ran smart.”
