JDHS falls to Sitka in region baseball semifinal

TMHS eliminated from tournament by Ketchikan

Capital city baseball teams went down in the Region V Baseball Regional Tournament, Friday at Adair-Kennedy Field.

In a battle of undefeated tournament teams Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé fell to the Sitka Wolves 9-2 and in an elimination game Thunder Mountain High School was toppled by the Ketchikan Kings 8-2.

Against JDHS, Sitka put three runs across to open the game. Sophomore Tanner Steinson reached on an error with two outs, junior Grady Smith reached on another error, senior Bridger Bird walked. Sophomore courtesy runner Tyson Bartolaba entered for Smith and freshman courtesy runner Emmit Johnson for Bird. Senior Ben Turner singled to right field scoring Steinson and Bartolaba and sophomore Chance Coleman singled to left field scoring Johnson for a 3-0 lead.

The Crimson Bears scored one run in the bottom of the first inning as Lamar Blatnick doubled to left field, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on another errant delivery. JDHS added their second run in the bottom of the third inning as Finn Kesey hit a one out single, advanced on a walk to Blatnick and a sacrifice by Eli Crupi and scored on a wild pitch.

Sitka put a run across in the top of the fifth inning with Bird sacrificing in senior Dylan Marx. The Wolves added five runs in the top of the sixth with Coleman, sophomore Bryce Calhoun, freshman Brett Ross, Steinson and Smith crossing the plate.

Blatnick led JDHS with two hits, Bodhi Nelson and Kesey added one apiece. Blatnick, Joe Aline, Luke Dean and Kesey earned one walk each.

Aline started on the mound for JDHS, going 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs, walking two and striking out three. Riley Fick pitched two outs, allowed three hits and two runs and struck out one. Luke closed for one inning and allowed three hits.

Sitka’s Smith pitched the complete seven innings, allowed four hits and two runs, walked four and struck out nine for the win.

Sitka’s Bird led the Wolves with three RBI, Coleman led with three hits, and Steinson led with two runs scored.

Sitka plays a 3 p.m. championship game against the winner of the JDHS and Ketchikan elimination game at noon.

KAYHI 8, TMHS 2

Thunder Mountain struggled to get across the plate in their elimination game against Ketchikan.

The Kings scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, added a run in the third and two more in the fourth for a commanding 8-0 advantage.

The Falcons two runs came in the top of the seventh inning as Rory Hayes led off with a single, Carson Cummins singled and Anthony Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Hayes. JJ McCormick doubled to score Cummins.

Anderson and McCormick had the lone RBIs for the Falcons. Cummins had two hits in the game, Hayes, Anderson and McCormick one hit each. Kaden Quinto earned a walk.

Anderson started on the mound for the Falcons and went three innings, allowed four hits and eight runs, and walked three. Ethan Lewis relieved for one inning, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. Quinto closed for two innings, allowed one hit and struck out one.

Kegan Moore led Kayhi with three RBI, two hits and one run scored. Colby Hanchey, Ben Phillips, Gage Massin and Jesse Albecker had one hit each. Hanchey and Hayden Trudeau had one RBI apiece. Phillips, Trevor Sayer, Massin, Albecker and Trudeau had one run each.

Chase Hanis threw the seven innings, allowed five hits and two runs, walked one and struck out three.

Ketchikan advances to an elimination game at noon Saturday against JDHS. The winner of that game plays at 3 p.m. against Sitka for the championship. If Sitka loses an if necessary game will be played for the title.

JDHS has already qualified for state by virtue of having the best conference record for regular season.
