Ketchikan spikers earn Region V title game

Thanks to the Ketchikan High School Lady Kings only one Juneau school will play for the Region V volleyball championship on Saturday.

The second seeded Kayhi girls topped third seeded Thunder Mountain 22-25, 25-18, 25-15 and 25-22 to open the tournament on Friday and followed that with a five set 28-30, 25-22, 25-17, 9-25, 15-9 win over top seeded Juneau-Douglas later in the night.

The Falcons and the Crimson Bears will now play at noon on Saturday in an elimination game with the winner having to defeat the Lady Kings twice, beginning at 4 p.m.

In Friday’s first match Ketchikan’s Havalah Clark had 15 kills against Thunder Mountain. Kaia Michalsen added 12 kills, 1 block, 1 ace; Gabby Clark 6 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace; Kinani Halvorsen 5 kills, 5 blocks; Kreylynn Johnson 2 kills, 2 blocks; and Jenny Hu 1 kill, 2 digs.

The Falcons were led by Maya Haywood’s 14 kills and 9 blocks; Maxie Saceda-Hurt 9 kills, 2 blocks; Abby DeRocher 2 kills, 2 aces, 5 digs; Mary Landes 3 kills, 1 ace; Tracy Bourassa 2 digs, 1 ace; Marissa Tanuvasa-Tuvaifale 1 kill; and Rachel Macauley 1 kill. 

Ketchikan gave up 34 points on unforced errors and TMHS committed 39.

In Friday’s match two Michalsen led Ketchikan with 19 kills, 1 ace, 1 dig against JDHS; H. Clark 13 kills, 2 blocks, 1 dig; G. Clark 3 kills, 4 blocks, 1 ace; Johnson 3 blocks; Halvorsen 3 kills, 3 blocks; and Whitney Hamilton 2 aces.

JDHS’ Maddie McKeown totaled 26 kills, 4 blocks; Kallen Hoover 10 kills, 1 block, 1 ace, 1 dig; Abby Meiners 2 kills, 3 blocks, 1 ace; Leah Spargo 5 kills, 2 aces, 1 dig; Martina Worden 3 kills, 1 ace 2 digs; Tona Fogg 1 kill, 1 block, 2 digs; and Riley Stadt 1 dig.

Ketchikan totaled 39 unforced errors and JDHS had 43.
