Mixed results for TMHS girls on the road

Lady Falcons win and lose during busy week.

The Thunder Mountain Girls were on the road again this past week, winning one game and losing three.

The Lady Falcons were scheduled to play four games —with Saturday’s game results unavailable at the time this article was written — and prevailed against Chugiak High School and lost to Colony High School and Monroe Catholic High School. Their record is now 9-4.

In Wednesday’s game against Chugiak, TMHS came out hot in the second half and rode a 19-6 third quarter to a 53-42 win.

“Our big three of the Baxter twins and Ashlyn Gates controlled the boards with blocked shots and defense,” said coach Andy Lee.

Seven players scored in the victorious effort. Kerra Baxter led TMHS in scoring with 17 points and Kiara Kookesh added 11 points.

Thursday, TMHS was unable to beat last year’s No. 3 team, the Colony Knights, but did hold a lead late in the game.

While Colony led 21-18 at the half, TMHS was able to storm back to fourth-quarter lead before a Colony 8-0 run at the four-minute mark reversed the Lady Falcons’ fortunes.

Friday, Monroe came out on the winning side of a 31-28 defensive battle. A tough Monroe defense stymied TMHS’ efforts on offense preventing any single player from reaching double figures in scoring.

Saturday, the Lady Falcons fell 53-36 against Grace Christian School.

Cailynn Baxter led TMHS in scoring with 15 points, and Jaya Carandang finished just shy of double figures with 9 points.

“We had some bright spots throughout the game and played with improved effort,” Lee said.

The game concludes a run of 13 games in 20 days for the TMHS girls. They’ll now get a few days off before hosting Palmer at 6:45 p.m. on Friday and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
