Softball sees tough competition in Washington

The Thunder Mountain and Juneau-Douglas High School softball teams opened the 2018 season in the greater Seattle area Thursday.

The Juneau teams were winless through Friday, with still two games left to go on Saturday.

TMHS lost 10-0 to Garfield High School on Friday afternoon in West Seattle.

Nina Fenumiai pitched three innings, struck out four and gave up 10 hits. Senior Megan Dallas pitched one inning, struck out one and gave up four hits.

Garfield junior Kaia Simpson pitched five innings, struck out eight and allowed one hit.

Fenumiai made it through the first inning with relative ease, striking out one and allowing just one hit. The Bulldogs’ bats heated up in the following innings though, especially after Fenumiai left the game in the third inning with an injury.

After loading the bases with no outs, Bulldogs freshman Nicola Simpson and sophomore Juno Shantz drew back-to-back walks to bring in two runs. The following two batters, senior Josie Barker and freshman Gabriella Hughes, drove in two additional runs

The game ended in the fifth inning with TMHS unable to put a dent in their 10-run deficit.

The Falcons lost 12-0 to Redmond High School on Thursday. The Mustangs jumped on the Falcons early, scoring four runs in the second inning and six in the third inning. Kiki Malloy fanned 11 batters and only allowed one hit.

Fenumiai pitched three innings, allowed 12 hits, struck out two and walked five. Dallas pitched just one inning in relief before the game was called after the top of the fifth.

The second inning looked promising for TMHS. Malloy walked the lead-off hitter, Nina Fenumiai, and gave up a Megan Dallas single two batters later. Malloy made up for it though, striking out sophomore Tasi Fenumiai and Marissa Tanuvasa to end the inning.

TMHS struck out three more times in the third inning, twice in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth inning.

Malloy impressed at the plate, too, securing five RBIs, two hits and one walk. Camille Eaton collected four RBIs and two hits.

JDHS fared much better at the plate in their contest on Thursday: outhitting Klahowya High School 10-9. However, the Crimson Bears still fell 14-10.

Senior Elisa Fabrello and junior Sophia Schauwecker finished with 3 RBIs apiece.

JDHS significantly cut into their nine-run deficit in the seventh and final inning. Following scores by Amanda Van Slyke and Asianna Mazon, Fabrello hit a three-run homer to bring the Crimson Bears within four. The JDHS rally came to a halt several batters latter with back-to-back strike outs.
