Thursday sports roundup

Three Juneau prep sports teams lost to Lathrop High School on Thursday night in Fairbanks.

The Thunder Mountain High School boys and girls basketball teams began their Joe T. Classic tournament campaigns 0-1 at Lathrop. Up the road at the Big Dipper Ice Arena, the Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team fell behind early to the Malamutes and never recovered in a 6-2 loss.

Lathrop 61, TMHS (boys) 59

The boys Falcons came within one shot of knocking off Lathrop, which survived with a 61-59 win on its home floor after Brady Carandang missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the game.

TMHS trailed 35-32 at halftime but the deficit grew in the third quarter as Lathrop went on a 17-8 run. Jhon Rones scored nine points in the critical third quarter for Lathrop.

Luke Clark scored 13 points for TMHS in the game; Carandang added 12.

The Falcons play Colony at 4:40 p.m. today.

Lathrop 50, TMHS (girls) 36

Eight different Falcons scored at least two points against Lathrop, but Thunder Mountain couldn’t stop Ella Roberts (16 points) and Olivia Kraska (15 points) in a 50-36 loss.

TMHS led 14-12 after the first quarter but quickly fell behind in the second quarter. Nina Fenumiai scored a team-high 16 points in the loss.

It was the second time the Falcons have dropped a game to Lathrop this season. TMHS fared much better in itssecond loss to the Malamutes — putting 15 more points on the scoreboard on Thursday from their previous contest.

Hockey: Lathrop 6, JDHS 2

Trailing by two goals, the Juneau-Douglas High School hockey team couldn’t close the gap in the second period against Lathrop.

The Crimson Bears failed to score in the second period and Lathrop put the game out of reach in the third period with two goals.

Lathrop’s Dante Curtis, Jagan Nautiyal and Deondric Henderson all tallied two goals in the win.

Jacob Dale and Bill Bosse scored for JDHS; Bosse, Owen Squires and Ronan Lynch picked up assists.

The JDHS junior varsity team played under the stars in Healy on Thursday. The Crimson Bears lost 4-3 to the Tri-Valley Warriors, who play and practice on an outdoor hockey rink near their high school.

Barrow 59, JDHS 58

Playing in the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School in Anchorage, Barrow’s Brendon Matthews made the go-ahead basket with 11 seconds left in the game as the Crimson Bears lost their third straight.

Erik Kelly turned in a 21-point, 14-rebound performance and fellow senior Kolby Hoover scored a season-high 18 points in the loss.

Travis Adams scored a team-high 21 points for Barrow.

Barrow advances to play Colony today in the Shootout semifinal. JDHS plays Southeast foe Mt. Edgecumbe at 3 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

JDHS will see the Whalers again in two weeks for the Whaler Invitational hosted by Barrow High School.
