Juneau-Douglas High School won two of three games at Ketchikan High School this weekend, with results of 4-2, 11-2 and 1-3.

In game three, Kasey Watts pitched a no-hitter through six innings but a questionable call at the plate ended his bid for the no-no. It would have been the sixth no-hitter in high school competitions this year.

From the mound in game one, Bryce Swofford overcame Ketchikan’s Nate Fousel, who had beaten the Crimson Bears twice this year already.

Coach Jim Ayers said the Crimson Bears played “real team baseball” over the weekend.

The two wins put JDHS in second place in Region V to face Ketchikan on Thursday at the Region V Tournament in Petersburg.

Thunder Mountain High School softball took two tough losses to Sitka High School this weekend, dropping them back to 5-5 in Southeast conference play.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning in Friday’s game when freshman Maxie Seceda-Hurt batted two in on a single to right field. Sitka answered in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own. Sitka went on to take a 4-2 lead by the sixth inning when the Falcons struck back to tie the game in the sixth off a single by senior Taylor Beardslee. TMHS took a one-run lead in the top of the seventh but Sitka was able to muster two in the final frame to take the decisive lead.

In Friday’s game, the Falcons opened scoring with a five-run first inning. Sitka struck back, however, going for two in the second and four in the third to take the lead from TMHS. Junior Falcon Alondra Echiverri hit a two-RBI double to right field in the fourth to take the lead back 7-6. Sitka then scored two runs of their own in the fourth to retake the lead and close scoring.

The Falcons had a chance to catch Juneau-Douglas High School’s 7-5 record with the Crimson Bears idle last weekend, but can still tie with this weekend’s two games against JDHS. Those will be played at 5 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday at Melvin Park.

Runners take off from their starts during their 100 meter event Saturday morning at Thunder Mountain Field.
