The Juneau-Douglas High School girls finished seventh at the ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State Cross Country Running Championships Saturday in Anchorage.
Sophomore standouts Sadie Tuckwood and Anna Iverson held off the bulk of the field to finish third and 12th respectively in the Division I girls 5-kilometer race.
After losing to Tuckwood in the 2016 state meet, West Valley’s Kendall Kramer took first overall this time, helping the Wolfpack (39 points) to the girls team title. Kenai Central (79 points) and Service (94 points) rounded out the top-three.
The JDHS boys team finished in 10th place as West Anchorage continued their boys cross country reign with a 39-point team championship. West Valley (71 points) snuck past Dimond (79 points) for the runner-up trophy.
Tuckwood led the race through the first kilometer, but Kramer made a move to the front soon after. The sophomore went on to put quite a gap between her, South Anchorage’s Ava Earl and Tuckwood.
“About a kilometer or so in, it was apparent that Kendall decided to really push the pace and see if she could put the gap on Sadie,” JDHS co-coach Tristan Knutson-Lombardo said. “And those are part of the mental tactics of cross country running as a sport.”
It was the first time Tuckwood hasn’t finished first in her still-blossoming high school cross country career.
“My goal was to speed up at the 2K, which I did a little bit, and then I was just super tired at the third or fourth kilometers,” Tuckwood said.
Sophomore Anna Iverson finished within a second of two other runners after hanging with the front pack all race.
“That’s what’s fun about going to the state meet is all the runners there pack so close — a few seconds is a matter of quite a few places. Every second counts,” Knutson-Lombardo said.
Top JDHS boys runner Arne Ellefson-Carnes finished 31 seconds behind boys first-place winner Ti Donaldson, covering the two-loop course in 16 minutes, 38 seconds.
“With these big race, it’s not necessarily about time, you just have to get in your pack that you run with,” Ellefson-Carnes said when asked about his racing strategy.
Clem Taylor-Roth (45th, 17:35), Tim McKenna (62nd, 18:05), Tim Degener (71st, 18:32), Ronan Davies (73rd, 18:37) and Max Dapcevich (82nd, 20:29) made up the rest of JDHS’ boys finishers.
Jasmin Holst (21:29) finished her first state meet in 50th place, not far ahead of teammates’ Miriam Stitz (58th, 21:44) and Sosan Monsef (68th, 22:15).
Thunder Mountain High School’s Hannah Deer finished 23rd overall. Reece Bleakley and Erin Wallace finished in 60th and 61st place respectively for the Falcons. TMHS’ lone boys qualifier, Shafer Suzuki, ran an 18:51 to finish 78th.
