SERR Ben Blackgoat Race
As if running up Mount Roberts last weekend wasn’t enough for the Southeast Road Runners, this Saturday they’re taking on Perseverance Trail in the Ben Blackgoat Memorial Race. The cool summer weather is perfect for running and a moderately steep pitch makes this the ideal training run for the Klondike Road Relay in September.
The race winds up Perseverance Trail from its start at the end of Basin Road and features 2, 4 and 7 mile distance options. Same day race registration begins at 8 a.m. at the starting line; race starts at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Ben Blackgoat Memorial Scholarship.

Post 25 attempts to close on division lead
Juneau’s American Legion Baseball team, Post 25, heads on their final road trip before the state tournament, playing two games this weekend. Post 25 faces Bartlett Post 29 (2-15; 21 points) on Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Eagle River (6-9; 33) Saturday at 3 p.m. (American Legion Baseball operates on a points system, awarding 4 points for a win, 2 points for a tie and 1 point for a loss).
Post 25 played a doubleheader against Kodiak Post 17 (1-12; 15 points) Thursday. Check the Empire online or @akempiresports on Twitter for results of those games.
At press time Thursday, Post 25 (13-1; 53 points) stood in second place in the National Division, trailing only Chugiak Post 33 (14-4; 60 points). Including Thursday’s two games against Kodiak, Juneau had four games in hand to pass Chugiak for the division lead, meaning any combination of wins, loses and ties netting eight points will clinch the division for Juneau.
